I didn't give a description of exactly what happened in the accident, because I felt it would detract from the ficlet's point. But imagine a car accident, with Tezuka, Fuji, and Ryoma as pedestrians. At the time of the accident, they were probably standing fairly close, side by side like they usually do in canon. So the accident was more like:
[Fuji, Ryoma, Tezuka] <-- [the car].
Remember, Ryoma escaped with some injuries, but obviously none serious, whereas Fuji was knocked unconscious and in coma for a couple of days. The most plausible explanation is that Tezuka, closest to the oncoming car, was actually shielding them both from his outermost position. Ryoma was really protected by both Tezuka, who pushed him out of the way, and Fuji, who broke his fall and was knocked unconscious in the process.
